Get a glimpse of Video Games in Japan during the turn of the century thanks to Colin Williamson and the Video Game History Foundation

Video Games might not be featured in too many museums, but that doesn’t mean it’s history shouldn’t be documented and archived. That’s the mission of the Video Game History Foundation and today the group released a brand new collection to their Digital Library which gives us an on the ground look at gaming during the late 90s/early 2000s.

The “Colin Williamson Photography Collection” collects the professional and personal photographs of journalist Colin Williamson who lived and worked in Japan from 1997 to 2025. The collection includes Williamson’s visits to Akihabara, trade shows such as Nintendo Space World, Tokyo Game Show, hardware launch events and event studios visits with some familiar faces.

If you want to learn more about the collection directly from Colin himself, he made an appearance on the foundation’s podcast Video Game History Hour (Episode 166) and Patreon members will get exclusive access to bonus content not available anywhere.

In addition to the newly released photo collection, the Digital Library is an ever growing trove of development documents, press materials, magazine scans and event videos (including some from our very own Anthony Parisi). It’s definitely worth diving into if you have some free time and if you wish to donate to the cause, you can do so via this link here.
